Description	A massive palm tree stands sentinel over McKinley Park's rose garden in this circa 1950 postcard. The garden was designed by Harvard-educated Frederick N. Evans, the city's first parks superintendent. Far from an easy task, Evans was forced to test several varieties of roses against Sacramento's scorching summer temperatures. Insisting on providing signage for both the English and Latin monikers for each plant, it was Evan's belief the garden should be educational and a place where "Sacramentans interested in flowers and plants may come to study their culture."
