. To the
left
is
restaurateur
George
Johnson
, a
Greek-American
who
immigrated
to the
United
States
in
1913
.
After
spending
his
formative
years
on the
east
coast
,
Johnson
moved
to
Reno
in
1939
.
It
was there that he
opened
a
restaurant
offering
a
ten-cent-or-less
menu
. He
expanded
operations
to
Sacramento
and
soon
thereafter
moved
to the
Capital
City
in
1947
. The
Giant
Shop
Restaurant
and the
Del
Prado
were
two
of his
best
known
eateries
. His
son’s
own
chain
,
Eppie’s
, would, for
decades
, be an
area
institution
prior
to its
closure
in
2004
. The
elder
Johnson
died
in
December
1979
,
having
lived
81
years
of
business
,
politics
and
mindful
philanthropy
.
