Title	Edgar Simpson in Chariot
Date	1922
Description	This May 1927 photograph captures Edgar Simpson, an Elk Grove-area rancher, readying to participate in the Sacramento ’49 Roundup, a rodeo-style event that sought to revive some of the legendary horsemanship of the mid-nineteenth century American West. Simpson’s chariot has ornamented wheels and is attached to three horses. In the background is the California State Fair grandstand; to the right of that is the Fair’s Agricultural Building. The daily-held chariot races were but a part of the rodeo that extended itself through the last weekend of May – a Pony Express reenactment, steer bull-dogging, trick riding, roping, cow horse racing, and steer riding were all part of the 15 event rodeo.
