The
Folsom
Water
Power
Company’s
power
canal
runs
toward
the
powerhouse
of the
Folsom
State
Prison
in this
circa
1895
photograph
. The
canal
–
built
with
granite
harvested
by
Folsom
prisoners
–
ran
eight
feet
deep
, was
40
feet
wide
on the
bottom
and
50
feet
wide
on the
surface
.
It
also
ran
along
the
entire
frontage
of the
prison
yard
. The
fall
of the
canal
from the
dam
to the
canal’s
terminus
in
Folsom
was
82
feet
. The
powerhouse
with its
vertical
windows
operated
with
six
Laffel
turbines
. The
prison’s
guard
towers
can
be
seen
in the
upper
,
left
of the
photograph
while
, in the
distance
, are
two
rises
, the
nearest
being
China
Hill
.
