This
picture
of the
Sacramento
and
Yolo
Bridge
was
taken
just
days
before
its
completion
in
June
1858
.
It
was
built
by the
Sacramento
and
Yolo
Bridge
Company
and
owned
by
native-Kentuckian
G.P
.
Gillis
and
native-Alabaman
Elam
Covington
.
Although
free
on its
first
day
of
service
-
July
1
-
thereafter
,
it
would be a
toll
bridge
. Its
first
test
came
on
July
2
when
160
head
of
cattle
were
driven
over
from
Washington
to
Sacramento
. The
bridge
held
and
one
spectator
,
Helen
B
.
Reid
,
called
it
"a
structure
we
may
be
proud
of, as
it
adds
greatly
to the
improvement
of
our
now
rapidly
progressing
city
.
Sacramento
has
flourished
more
in a
short
space
than any
other
place
in the
Union.
"
