Title	Sacramento Northern Railway and Charles Swanston and Son Packing House

Description	A Sacramento Northern passenger car idles in front of the Charles Swanston and Son Packing House in this circa 1920 photograph. Located along the Haggin Grant, just north of American River, the plant was built for 250,000 dollars, just a few years before this photograph was taken, in 1915. Its designers were the Sacramento-based architects Seadler and Hoen. The plant and its grazing facilities occupied nearly 2,000 acres of land, enabling the company to transfer its live holdings from the southern part of the city. Also crucial to the plant’s success was the construction of a spur that would run off the Southern Pacific main line. Founded by Charles Swanston in 1886, the company was sold to Safeway in 1943 and liquidated in 1948.
