Title	War Salvage Drive

Description	Members of Sacramento’s beverage industry pose to promote the collection of scrap to help the war effort in this July 1, 1943, photograph. The salvage of scrap was a nationwide effort, seeking excess metals and rubber from the public and businesses in both city and country. Sacramento definitely did its part and, in the county’s rural sections, over 90 percent of the farmers refused payment for their donations. The Work Projects Administration was responsible for collecting the scrap. The location of the photograph is X Street, between Sixth and Eighth Streets. In the background is the one million dollar, 310-unit New Helvetia Defense Housing Development which was opened in November of 1942 as a housing option for defense workers and low-income families.
