Title	Central Pacific Railroad and China Slough
Date	1868
Description	This spring 1868 picture – as taken from the roof of the Pioneer Milling Company at Front and G Streets – shows the Central Pacific Railroad as it ran along the northerly section of China Slough, also known as Sutter Lake or Sutter Slough. At roughly the same time, Central Pacific started to commandeer the slough, driving massive piles into four feet of water, and then filling the sections between with Rocklin rip-rap, shale, and sand. Layered above that was another four feet of solid granite before construction for the massive shop facilities were commenced. The high waters in the photograph were the result of flooding.
