Title	Central Pacific Railroad Locomotive “Governor Stanford”
Date	1863
Description	The Central Pacific Railroad’s “Governor Stanford” chugs by in this 1863 photograph. The 4-4-0 locomotive was built a year earlier by the Norris Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and then brought to San Francisco by sailing vessel. It was named to honor ex-California governor and the Central Pacific Railroad’s first president, Leland Stanford. Two engineers can be seen looking toward the camera. The “Governor Stanford” was the first locomotive purchased by the Central Pacific Railroad.
