moored
along
the
Sacramento
River’s
western
shore
in this
August
28
,
1932
,
photograph
. Of the
eight
stern
wheelers
,
two
barges
and
two
tugboats
destroyed
,
less
than
half
were
covered
by
insurance
. The
greatest
damage
was
done
to the
legendary
River
Lines
Company
which
lost
2,400-tons
of
freight
shipping
.
Without
knowing
for
certain
,
speculation
was that the
fire
started
as a
result
of
excess
amounts
of
oil
waste
or
gasoline
in the
engine
room
of the
freighter
Valetta
which
had
sat
idle
for
months
.
