Description	This wide open view of the northern reaches of William Land Park was taken in 1926. To the photograph’s left is the memorial statue and fountain of Charles Swanston, built in 1923/24 by Paris-based sculpture Ralph Stackpole, who also created the fountain in the middle of the city’s Cesar Chavez Park. Swanston faces west and the base of the sculpture faces north. It was commissioned by George Swanston who sought to preserve, partly the memory of his father, an area land holder and rancher, and partly the memory of the pioneers who settled the area. One of the unique features of the sculpture was an ice chamber whose purpose it was to keep the fountain’s waters cool. In the distant center of the photograph, one can see Moreing Field, later to be renamed Edmonds Field at the intersection of Y Street and Riverside Boulevard. Beyond the stadium is a faint glimpse of three structures: the dome of the California State Capitol, the Elks building and the California Western State Life Insurance Company building.
