This

photograph
shows
the
Travelers
Hotel
resting
at the
southwest
corner
of
Fifth
and
J
Streets
.
Built
in
1913/14
by the
Ransome
Concrete
Company
for a
cost
of
525,000
dollars
, the
six-story-high
hotel
was
regarded
as
state
of the
art
;
automatic
water
faucets
,
bedside
reading
lamps
,
bathtubs
,
instant
ice-water
,
four
layer
carpeting
“to
obliterate
the
hardness
of the
concrete
floors”
were a
few
of the
choice
amenities
. Its
manager
,
James
Flanagan
, was a
direct
protégé
of
William
Land
, and
claims
to have
arrived
in
Sacramento
in
1886
broke
,
working
his
way
into the
highest
circles
of the
hospitality
industry
. The
hotel
opened
on the
evening
of
May
16
,
1914
, to
considerable
fanfare
with
400
guests
,
complimentary
lemonade
, and with the
emcee
duties
going
to
D.W
.
Carmichael
.
Flanagan
was also
met
with a
round
of
“For
He’s
a
Jolly
Good
Fellow.”
In the
same
year
that this
photograph
was
taken
,
Sacramento’s
Marsh
Investment
Company
sold
the
hotel
to a
Bay
Area
investor
for
360,000
dollars
.
