Opened
on
February
11
,
1925
, the
new
four-story
,
155-bed
Mercy
Hospital
was
built
in the
shape
of an
X
to
ensure
–
or
so
thought
the
designers
–
that
patients
would be
afforded
ample
sunshine
.
Each
of the
four
wings
amounted
to
101
feet
in
length
and
41
feet
in
length
.
Grounds
covered
seven
acres
that were
once
part
of the
Inderkum
family
homestead
.
Prior
to this, the
facility
was
located
at
Twenty-Third
and
R
Streets
,
where
,
built
in
1897
,
it
was
known
as the
Mater
Misericordiae
or
“Mother
of
Mercy”
Hospital
.
