This
May

photograph
captures
a
procession
of
costumed
children
moving
down
through
the
600
block
of
J
Street
during
the
Days
of
’49
celebration
. The
event
was
started
in
1922
to
commemorate
the
founding
of
Sacramento
. The
parade
included
a
reenactment
of
Captain
John
Sutter’s
exploration
of the
area
and
eventual
founding
of the
fort
that would
bear
his
name
.
Seventy-five
Native
Americans
were
brought
in from
various
Nevada
reservations
to
make
the
event
more
authentic
.
Along
another
stretch
of
J
Street
, a
skirmish
was
reenacted
as
Sutter
is
rescued
from the
group
by the
Captain’s
namesake
militia
, the
Sutter
Rifles
,
which
was
made
up
of
men
stationed
at
Mather
Field
.
