shows
the
Paintersville
Bridge
spanning
the
Sacramento
River
at a
spot
just
south
of
Courtland
. The
bridge
, a
length
of
200
feet
, was
named
after
Indiana
native
Levi
Painter
,
who
, in
1855
,
purchased
a
123
acre
ranch
, and
effectively
established
a
community
supported
in
large
part
by a
salmon
cannery
.
Painter
built
a
sizable
fortune
based
on the
production
of
produce
and
beef
, and
operating
a
boarding
house
for those
employed
at the
cannery
. His
namesake
bridge
–
of the
double
leaf
bascule
moveable
variety
–
was
built
in
1923
,
replacing
a
ferry
system
.
